WordPress Website Design and Management for Small Businesses
Most small businesses do not need a brand new website. They need their existing website to work properly, look the part, and actually do something useful for their business.
That might mean updating pages that have fallen out of date, building out new sections to support a growing service offer, redesigning something that is no longer reflecting the business well, or occasionally starting fresh when the existing site has simply reached the end of its useful life.
I’m Ben Webb, a freelance marketing consultant and Growth Partner based in Worcestershire. Website design and management is one part of the broader marketing support I provide to small businesses across the UK.
The majority of my website work starts not with a blank canvas but with an existing site, helping clients update, improve, and expand what they already have. Over time, some of those projects grow into full rebuilds. Others are simply about keeping things current and working well.
What sets my approach apart from a standalone web designer is that the website always sits within the broader marketing context. It is built to support your SEO, to work with your content strategy, and to convert the visitors your marketing brings in, not just to look good.
What I Can Help You With
Managing and Updating Existing Websites
This is the most common starting point. A client comes to me for help with their marketing and their website needs attention alongside everything else. That might mean updating copy, building out a new service page, redesigning a section that is no longer working, or gradually improving the site over time as part of an ongoing partnership. I can jump onto most existing WordPress builds and work with what is already there.
Full Website Redesigns and New Builds
Sometimes a site has run its course and the right answer is to start again properly. I also work with clients who are starting from scratch and need a website built from the ground up. Either way, the process is the same: discovery and research first, then build.
I build brochure sites, service sites, sites with ecommerce functionality, and sites with membership areas, whatever the business needs. The goal in every case is a website that is genuinely evergreen: built to be updated and grown for years to come, not one that ties the client to a particular developer or becomes impossible to change without specialist help.
Ongoing Maintenance and Support
Websites need looking after. Plugins need updating, content needs refreshing, and things occasionally go wrong. I offer ongoing maintenance and management for clients who want peace of mind that their website is being kept in good order, as well as a trusted pair of hands when something needs changing.

How I Approach a Website Project
Discovery and Research
Every project starts with understanding the business properly. What does the brand look like? Who is the audience? What do competitors’ websites look like, and where are the design and content opportunities? This research informs the structure, layout, and feel of the site before anything is built.
Templates Before Pages
Rather than building the whole site page by page from scratch, I start by building the core templates (a service page template, a blog template, a landing page template) and get those right first. Once the templates are agreed, building out the full site from them is significantly faster and produces a more consistent result.
Copy and Content
I can work with copy the client provides, help repurpose and improve existing copy, or write the website copy from scratch as part of the project. Given that copywriting runs through all of my marketing work, having the person building the site also writing the copy tends to produce a more cohesive result than briefing a separate writer.
Platforms and Page Builders
I work primarily with WordPress, which remains the most flexible and widely supported platform for small business websites. Within WordPress, my preferred page builders are Divi and Elementor, both offer significantly more design flexibility and long-term maintainability than most other options, and I would typically recommend one of these for any new build.
That said, I can work with most WordPress page builders and themes. Many of my clients have existing sites built on a variety of platforms, and I can usually work with what is already there rather than requiring everything to be rebuilt from scratch on a preferred platform.
On hosting, I typically recommend clients host their own websites rather than relying on their web designer for hosting. It means you retain full control of your site and are not dependent on any one supplier. That said, I can advise on hosting options and help with setup if needed.
Who This Is For
My website work tends to suit small businesses who:
- Have a WordPress site that needs updating, improving, or expanding and want a trusted pair of hands to do it
- Are ready for a full redesign and want someone who understands both design and the marketing strategy behind it
- Are starting from scratch and want a site built to last rather than one they will outgrow in two years
- Want their website to work as a genuine marketing asset, supporting SEO, converting visitors, and reflecting their brand properly
- Are already working with a marketing partner and want their web presence managed as part of that relationship
I work with businesses across the UK, with a particular focus on Worcestershire, Kidderminster, Worcester, Bewdley, Stourport-on-Severn, and the Wyre Forest area.
Common Questions About Website Design
Do you only work with WordPress?
WordPress is my primary platform and what I would recommend for most small business websites. That said, I can work with other platforms where clients already have something in place. If you are unsure whether your existing platform is something I can help with, just ask.
Can you work on my existing site even if you did not build it?
Yes, this is the most common scenario. I work on existing WordPress sites regularly, regardless of who built them originally. The main thing I need is access to the WordPress dashboard and, where relevant, the page builder being used.
How much does a website cost?
It depends entirely on the scope of the project. Smaller updates and ongoing management work can sit within a monthly Growth Partnership from £335 per month. Larger builds are scoped and priced individually based on what is involved. The starting point is always a conversation about what you need and what would represent the best use of your budget.
Will I be able to update the site myself once it is built?
Yes, and that is an important part of how I approach every build. The goal is always a website you can update and grow yourself if you want to, without being dependent on a developer for every small change. I build with longevity in mind, not sites that lock clients into ongoing dependency.
Let’s Talk About Your Website
Whether your existing site needs some attention, you are thinking about a full redesign, or you just want an honest opinion on where things stand, I am happy to have a conversation about it.
